What to buy for your cat to play with? Top 5 cat toys

Kotek bawiący się zabawką. Co kupić dla Kota do zabawy?

An outdoor cat that lives freely does not need to be encouraged to be active. Such cats patrol their territories, the so-called home range – a regularly visited area where they leave primarily scent marks and from which they observe the surroundings. This is also where they obtain food, fulfilling their hunting needs.

It is estimated that even feral cats spend only 15% of their time hunting, 3% wandering and 2% on cat matters known only to them (during the study, scientists did not see the cats and did not know what happened to them), which in total gives 20% of activity, with 40% devoted to sleeping and 22% to resting! However, this is 20% of some daily physical activity.

In indoor cats, such activity often needs to be stimulated. Otherwise, our Pet will not only gain too much weight, which is unhealthy for him, but will also lose condition (the famous Cat moves...) and his senses will become dull. Of course, the most pleasant method of such stimulation is play!

No, it's not those balls with bells inside or those cotton mice stuffed with catnip. Cats only play with their special cat toys for a few minutes while you watch, so that you don't get discouraged and stop buying them food.

It is important to remember that Cats are only seemingly loners, constantly wandering around without company. In reality, they are connected to a kind of vast cat network, reaching beyond time and space.

In his own mind, the Cat is constantly competing and measuring himself against all others that have ever existed, anywhere.

The Wild Nature of the Cat, or Why Does a Cat Need Toys?

The meal appears in the bowl by itself, and the Cat does not have to "work" to get it. Do you think that Cats are "maintenance-free" animals, and the caregiver is a servant responsible for serving food and cleaning the litter box? Wrong!

A cat is a predator with a strong hunting instinct, which does not disappear just because the cat becomes a lazy couch potato, to whom we put a bowl of food several times a day. Experts say that no one has ever domesticated a cat - the cat domesticated itself, out of convenience, but even when it decided that it would be more comfortable with people, its life most often came down to hunting rodents in the yard.

From time to time he would warm himself on the stove, get a bowl of milk (once upon a time, no one took into account the fact that cats could be lactose intolerant...), sleep off his nightly hunts, and return to his natural activity.

Cats as a species have never been trained to get rid of or temper their hunting instincts. We say professionally that the mechanism of hunting behavior in cats has never been artificially modeled. Therefore, even our couch potato, who seems to put a lot of effort into reaching for the next dietary kibble of perfectly balanced dry food lying within sight, has a hunting instinct.

Maybe dormant, maybe dulled, but it's definitely there. To awaken and sharpen this instinct, reach for the toys!

The reproductive cycle of cats works in such a way that as early as six weeks after giving birth, a female cat can enter a new heat period and become pregnant again. A pregnant female cat (pregnancy lasts about 60 days), even if she is still taking care of kittens from the previous litter, slows down her activity two weeks before giving birth and stops taking care of them.

That is why a twelve-week-old kitten must be able to take care of itself, which is why the little ones are so full of energy, constantly jumping, running around, "fighting" with their siblings and are like quicksilver. The mother cat often brings them half-dead mice or birds so that they can also "dry hunt". The faster and more agile the kittens are, the greater the chance that when they are left to their own devices at a too young age, they will be able to hunt, and therefore survive.

Toys not only diversify the life of a cat and prevent our pet from being lethargic and eternally bored (and then the cat comes up with various things...), but also help us take care of its fitness, sharpen its senses and remind the cat that it is a cat - a fierce predator that in nature hunts even dozens of times a day, because... as many as 75% of attacks end in failure and the victim fleeing. Oops...

The best toys for cats, what are they?

It lies down, gains weight, craves treats, licks its fur… It’s obvious that your cat is bored to death. This is probably due to the small amount of stimuli that the animal has to deal with in its daily environment. Choosing a toy for your feline pet can be a headache.

There is such a wide range of gadgets on the market – from simple ones, like a fishing rod, through slightly more sophisticated ones, like ball mazes, to interactive and electronic ones, which work for cats like a smartphone works for humans… – that the purchase should be really carefully considered.

It is worth considering not only the attractiveness of the toy from our, human, point of view, but above all its attractiveness to the Cat. The specificity of the cat's hunting instinct, which is closely related to the mechanism of play, is activated by a moving stimulus.

A trendy toy bought for millions of coins is useless if you can't wave it in front of the cat's nose, roll it on the ground, throw it on the couch. The main rule of cat toyology is: the Cat should play, not the caregiver. That is, the caregiver too, but not more than the Cat!

Remember that Cats have different temperaments and characters. Depending on age, gender, breed and individual experiences, they react differently to individual stimulants - sound, light or smell. Yes, there are Cats who don't give a damn about catnip and those who live from sniff to sniff.

Let's also take into account that although we associate cats with climbing trees, roofs and cornices, many animals can climb or jump really high, but are afraid to come down! If a cat once chases a ball, a pom-pom or a rustling piece of paper all the way to the ceiling and we have to evacuate it from there, it may become discouraged both from toys and from the bookshelf, which it has considered an excellent playground until now.

We could divide toys like this:

  • mice,
  • balls,
  • fishing rods,
  • tunnels,
  • filled with catnip and/or valerian,
  • laser,
  • interactive,
  • for scratching.

As you can see, the list starts with the simplest toys that most likely meet the hunting needs of every Cat (mice, balls, fishing rods). The next category is tunnels and all other structures that the Cat has to crawl through, push through, break through - just like on a real hunt.

Some animals really love this type of play, others will not enter the tunnel for anything – it is enough that it is made of a rustling material, the sound of which has a deterrent effect on the Cat. Next, we have toys with catnip and/or valerian, about whose adoration or complete ignorance we have already written.

Cat herbs can be filled with mice, balls and toys attached to the end of a rod, as well as an addition to a scratching mat (scratching toys are last on our list). There is also no shortage of laser toys (some cats are carried away by honor and would not dart around the room after a laser light for anything in their life...) and interactive toys (this is an option for cats that are left alone at home for a long time).

Did you know that…
When a cat is too inactive and plays with its owner too infrequently, it may display the following behaviors:

  • attacking, scratching and biting feet and hands,
  • lying in wait for a passing person and jumping out at him suddenly,
  • stealing food,
  • persistent vocalization during hours of cat activity and human inactivity, i.e. at night,
  • destructive behavior (e.g. dropping or dragging objects).

Toys should not only “entertain” the Cat, but above all stimulate its development and satisfy the needs resulting from the hunting instinct. Here are 5 toys for Cats that we think will work best.

What to buy for your cat to play with - top 5 cat toys

Fishing Rods for Cat

Advantages : the ability to imitate the Cat's hunting cycle while playing with the owner, the toy can be made by yourself, and a ready-made one from a pet store is cheap (from a dozen or so zlotys).

Thanks to the fishing rod for Cat, we are able to activate our Pet to such an extent that during play we will recreate the entire hunting cycle that Cats have to go through in nature to catch something to eat. Of course, the Cat crazy about the fishing rod will have to get a treat or a whole meal from our hand, but he will still be satisfied: after each hunt there must be a reward!

How to recreate the Cat's hunting cycle while playing with a fishing rod?

Don't wave a toy or feather duster right in front of your cat's nose - real prey doesn't parade in front of a predator, waiting to be devoured. Put the "prey" in plain sight and wait for your cat to take an interest in it. Let your predator strike suddenly, and when its paw with extended claws is about to land on the toy/feathers - jerk the rod up. Didn't work? Was the cat faster? Never mind. Simulate the "prey" struggling to get away, and when you succeed (the cat may hold the toy with its front paws and playfully "pedal" with its back paws, which makes the task much more difficult), put it back in the hunter's sight.

If your Pet doesn't intend to sneak up, but just lies expectantly on its back and expects you to dangle the toy in front of its nose, respect that. Adult Cats, who are no longer used to hunting, satisfy the remnants of their hunting instinct in this way.

In nature, the Cat eats its prey with fur, bones or feathers. Now, however, remember that in the heat of play, the Cat should not eat the toy attached to the end of the rod (yes, quality matters – the toy must be completely safe).
When the game starts to end, don't take the rod away from the Cat by force: let it grab it, tear it, "chew" it, and then take it to its favorite and safe place, just like it would with a real victim. Now you fill the bowl, the Cat comes running for a meal, and you have a moment to take and put away the rod until the next hunt.

Balls

Advantages : stimulating physical activity, especially important for cats who spend most of their time on the couch; distraction from other items the cat could destroy, e.g. shoes; low price.

Some cats love to run after a ball, and when they drop it under furniture, they will do miracles to get it out. If our pet is not overly reactive to sounds, we can get him a ball with a bell inside or a rustling one. It is worth making sure that the ball is made of durable material, so that the cat cannot tear it apart and eat it - along with the bell...

Did you know that…
Cats do not see shades of red: colors containing such a component are seen differently by cats than by humans. When there is good lighting, the cat's world is blue-purple-green. After dark, cats, like humans, see the image only in shades of gray. Therefore, the color of the ball you buy is of little importance - what matters is that it is a shape that allows rolling, tumbling and hunting.

Toy fish

Advantages : The cat can play alone, interactive fish gives the illusion of catching real prey, moderate price.

A fish at the end of a rod, making movements similar to natural fish with a USB battery, or maybe an app with fish swimming on the screen? For a cat, basically... fish! If the toy fish also contains catnip and is made of soft plush and high-quality cotton, it is ideal for your pet to play with (bite, chew). In the case of apps like Cat Fishing, we have to be careful that our cat does not get discouraged too quickly: the cat does not realize that in such games it is doomed to failure from the start, because the virtual fish cannot be hunted, and each paw slap is just a point that the cat does not care about much. Apps can be used, for example, in the queue to the vet, but in the long run they are only addictive for the cat, although they do not satisfy hunting instincts.

Catnip Toy

Advantages : stimulation or calming – depending on the current emotional state of the Cat.

Catnip toys are always good to have on hand, because they are used as a form of encouragement or reward during training, for example when we want to convince the cat to use a new scratching post. They are also useful when traveling, when guests come over or in other stressful situations for the cat. However, if catnip has a stimulating effect on our pet, we need to be careful!

Did you know that…
Catnip naturally occurs in Europe, Asia and North Africa. There are over 250 species of this plant. Catnip can have a stimulating and calming effect on cats, which most often happens in stressful situations. Cats love the plant because it contains an organic compound called nepetalactone, the smell of which reminds them of a cat pheromone. A cat intoxicated with catnip can look and behave really funny. For example, like Chloe in the animated film "The Secret Life of Pets"

Cat Carousel

Advantages : play can be combined with agility training and stimulation of hunting instinct, low to moderate price.

A carousel or a tower of balls encourages the cat to take up activity even when the owner does not have time for it. It improves the cat's dexterity and has a positive effect on the animal's intelligence and condition. The non-slip feet of the carousel itself ensure the stability of the toy even on smooth surfaces, and the balls added to it can have many additional advantages, e.g. they can flash, make sounds, rustle, swing uncontrollably in all directions. The number of balls varies in each model, and we can also buy them separately if they get lost or damaged. A battery-powered carousel gives many more possibilities for play than a model without this convenience.

Other interesting toys for cats

Our top five is, of course, a subjective selection of cat toys. You can also find on store shelves:

Laser for Cat

According to many behaviorists, it has the same negative impact on the cat's psyche as the aforementioned smartphone or tablet apps: the lack of physical ability to catch the prey (the light) frustrates the cat, which can cause behavioral problems. Every hunting game should end with success and a reward in the form of prey or a treat. When using a laser, we must also watch out for the cat's eyes. The laser light can be useful when we want to quickly distract the cat from something.

Cat Tunnel

Some animals love to squeeze through tunnels and can play like that for a very long time, especially if the tunnel is made of rustling material and gives the cat a taste of hunting in the wilderness. However, it should be remembered that the Cat may have claustrophobia, so if it absolutely refuses to play in the tunnel, do not force it to do so, because we will cause a panic attack, which will manifest itself in our Pet with a dangerously accelerated heartbeat, jerking, uncontrolled defecation, urination, and even vomiting.

Cat Play Mat

It may resemble a classic baby mat with arches and toys attached to them, but it can also have a more modern form, as is the case with toys such as the Cat Activity Fun Board - plastic mats that give the cat various play options, presenting it with new challenges: rolling a ball, digging out treats, moving them with a paw, pulling them out with the mouth, etc.

Feathers on springs

Such a toy consists of an elastic spring with a set of soft feathers at the end. We can choose a stationary model with a non-slip pad or a foot cover: then all we need to do is move our leg, while doing something else (e.g. reading, watching TV), and the Cat has a great time attacking the feathers.

Interactive toys for Cat

They work best when the owners are not present. However, if a carousel, ball launcher or strategic toy that forces the cat to search for its favorite snacks is really engaging and stimulating for our Pupil, it is worth reaching for them more often.

How to play with Cat?

A cat, of course, needs toys that stimulate its natural instincts, but it also needs play and interaction with its caregiver. Play should be intense but short – a cat can effectively focus on one object for only a few to a dozen minutes. We must remember that the periods of human and feline activity do not always coincide: for a cat, the hours of greatest activity are early morning (in summer around 4:00 a.m., in winter around 6:00–7:00 a.m.) and evening (usually between 9:00 and 11:00 p.m.). Many animals will therefore not be interested in playing at noon, when it is time for a nap and regeneration.

Remember also that Cats love boxes, boxes and little boxes. Whenever you can, leave the packaging for the Cat to play with, making sure it is safe for him. No, don't worry that your pet won't fit in it. After all, you know that a Cat is... a liquid - it always takes the shape of the container it is in, even if it is a really tiny container.

Cat games bring happiness to your pet!

Boredom and a lack of sufficient activity in a cat's daily life can cause behavioral disorders. This alone should draw the attention of the owner to the importance of proper stimulation of the animal in a home environment. Apart from health reasons, cats simply need play to be happy and to deepen the bond with their owner. When preparing a layette for a cat, it is worth buying 2-3 basic toys from our TOP 5 list at the beginning, and then gradually buying the next ones so that our pet does not get bored. Over time, we will also better recognize its needs and will be able to choose only those toys that are really valuable to it.
